Develop your yacht sailing skills on this cruising course where both the RYA Competent Crew and the RYA Coastal Skipper courses run alongside each other. All our instructors are highly knowledgeable and experienced skippers and will ensure you really get the most out of your time onboard.
RYA Competent Crew: This course is aimed at beginners and those who want to become an active crew member rather than just a passenger.
RYA Coastal Skipper: This course is aimed at aspiring skippers with some yachting experience and basic navigation and sailing skills. By the end of the week coastal skippers should be able to undertake more difficult passages by day and night and handle the yacht in more challenging conditions.
Key learning points: Passage planning, preparation for sea, passage making and ability as skipper, yacht handling under sail and power, adverse weather conditions.
Meals onboard: The boat will be stocked to provide three meals per day as well as snacks and drinks. If you have any special dietary requirements please note them when booking.
The Yacht: 38ft Hanse 385 . Commercially coded by RYA/MCA as category 2 compliant the yacht can carry 6 people including the Skipper. Facilities onboard include; heating, hot water, cooker, fridge, toilet, Radar, GPS and AIS.
Arrival: All our week cruising courses begin at 7.00pm on the Sunday evening. Please meet your skipper in Reception at 7pm, where you will be given a short briefing, and be issued with waterproofs before driving down to the yacht, moored at Port Dinorwic, 5 minutes away from the Centre. You will stay onboard the yacht for all five nights of your course.
Please bring with you; warm clothes, a sleeping bag and sailing wellies (not black soled)
The Next Steps: If you want to progress your cruising, then those taking the RYA Competent Crew course should look at progressing to RYA Day Skipper level. It is recommended you complete the RYA Day Skipper Theory before undertaking the RYA Day Skipper practical certificate. For those completing the RYA Coastal Skipper certificate you should build up your hours and experience and then consider the Yachtmaster Preparation week or if you feel ready go straight for the Exam
